Year 5 Journalistic Writing

Year 5 have been looking at newspaper recounts. Look at some of the ones we have written.

Monster Mayhem!
In the early hours of Saturday morning, a beastly monster struck at a local school. Mrs Levy, the caretaker at Redlands Primary School, was cleaning and tidying a classroom when she appeared to see a mysterious shadow. The Police believe that the Monster was in search of food!

Mrs Levy (the eyewitness) got a horrible shock as she watched the beast stomp around the school destroying valuable items like awards and trophies. Mrs Levy hid in Class 10 and called the Police. She described the Monster as strange, worrying and that it had ‘eyes as red as tomato soup!’

Finally, after thirty minutes the Police arrived, they listened to Mrs Levy and she told them what had happened. The Police searched the premises for the Monster.
It took twelve officers to apprehend the beast. The Monster was charged with four offenses, one for breaking valuables. Luckily he has been put into prison for four months.
Do you think he will attack again?

Monster Mayhem!!

In the early hours of Saturday morning, a Monster struck a local school.
Mrs Levy, who is the caretaker of Redlands Primary School, was peacefully cleaning class 11, when she spotted out of the darkness a horrifying shadow mysteriously appeared.
It was a MONSTER …

Some of the locals believe that it was trying to eat children!
Mrs Levy (The only eyewitness) said that it looked like a human sized Gollum out of The Lord of the rings. As quick as a lightning bolt she rang the Police and with luck they were there within 5 minutes.

The Police said that it took 12 officers to wrestle the beast to the ground. The chief commented on the event ‘The beast will be charged with 4 offences, including one of the worst ones – trying to eat children!!’

“As a result the beast will be behind tough, iron bars forever. Don’t worry no body is responsible and it will be behind bars forever!”

In an interview with the chief, he stated ‘This horror will never happen again’.
The Police are already making plans if the Monster tries to escape.

Year 6 'Varmint' Work

In Year 6 we have been using the book 'Varmint' to produce some fiction and non-fiction pieces of writing. We have written stories, autobiographies (as the Varmint), diaries and a newspaper article. Have a look at some of our work.

We used some images from the book by Helen Ward and Marc Craste. Most of our inspiration came from watching parts of the video each day.

The Varmint short film

Narrative pieces:

Whirling through the sky, the dandelion puffballs fly through the air. Sparrows could be heard singing. Twitching his ears, the Varmint surveyed his surroundings. He had found a precious poppy. He took out a magnifying glass and made notes. Buzzing around, a bee landed on his nose. Then it led him to an old, willow tree...

He woke up. He heard rumbling. Alarmed, the Varmint stumbled towards a gloomy, dark cloud. Crestfallen, curiosity devoured his fear. He decided to take a closer look! But as soon as he did, he wished he hadn't. He stopped. He stared. He blinked. Was this a dream?

On the horizon, the Varmint saw ebony smoke and unnaturally elephantine, dark clouds. Conflicting emotions fought for domination of the brain. In the end, curiosity reined. As he walked towards the strange mass of smoke, he choked as sulfurous smells curled, lashing him to the floor. With a great deal of effort, he got up. He felt like running. A bomb of anger exploded inside him. Then his ears dropped down and his heart sank like a stone in water.

Hundreds of Varmints were pulling up skyscrapers in lines; marching to a beating drum. Mountains of concrete, steel and glass. Unnatural. They thundered into the ground. And the sky turned grey.

Stunned by an immense noise, the Varmint scurried back towards the tree as a sea of gravel chased him. Scared out of his hide, the Varmint took two handfuls of soil, climbed the tree and snapped a tiny branch, shoving it into his satchel.

Dead silence.

The Varmint took a couple of deep breaths and dozed off into a deep sleep.

Awakened by a glimmering light, he walked towards the city bravely.

It was dull, it was disgusting, it was a horrific sight. The new city smelt smoky, as if it were burning. Apprehensively, the Varmint entered the gateway with extreme caution. Why was everyone different to him?

Walking swiftly, he shielded his face from the harsh hail. As he gained access to the lift, previous friends shoved past him without a care in the world.

Washing his velvety paws, the Varmint glanced over at his young, green sapling. The one he nourished. Surveying his belongings (a magnifying glass, a book and his precious plant), the tired creature padded along the dull, grey floor towards his desk. In deep thought, he wrote in his book. Gleefully looking at his piece of greenery, the sleepy-eyed Varmint headed to bed.
