Osmington Day 5
Well it had to eventually arrive, although I don't quite think the children are ready to go home. Leaving day and everything is packed into one small room, we've had breakfast and it is almost time for activities.
The children have had an amazing experience, although it is not over yet. Quad biking and Jacob's ladder for some, indoor climbing and zip wire for others. What a final morning!!!
See you all later, but not until we've had lots more fun and overcome a few more challenges.

Osmington Day 4 - Sorry it's late!
Bags packed (mostly), children asleep (mostly) and teachers
exhausted (completely)! Our final night in Osmington and wow how the week has
flown! We have had another amazing day today, beach walking, zip wire, quad
biking, abseiling, climbing, sensory trail and problem solving were all on
offer and this evening brought the disco! Gladrags on, the children danced the
night away to such classic dances as YMCA and Cotton Eyed Joe. It was also great to
see them boogieing to tunes we had never heard before! The children enjoyed the
range of activities and threw themselves into the different sessions and showed
great determination to challenge themselves. We have been so impressed by their
sense of fun and eagerness to succeed, one of the quad bike groups managed to
beat the camp record of with 8 children completing the course without touching
the tyres or crashing! The children have all pushed themselves out of their comfort zone which is what it is all about. We were very proud! See you tomorrow to hear the
adventures first hand!!

Osmington Day 3
The weather has been different – rain, wind and sun but not
in that order!!!!
This morning we all did different activities such as
abseiling, orienteering, problem solving and Jacob’s ladder which were good fun
but then, after lunch we all went on a major hike together. One of the
highlights was the stop at the ice cream shop where, despite the rain, we
enjoyed different flavours although the Turkish delight ran out before the
teachers got to it! Rain definitely did not stop play as we rambled across the
coastal paths hearing tales of smugglers and King George. The waves were
crashing and the rain was horizontal as we climbed yet another hill – there
seem to lots locally unlike Fareham! Tonight’s activity was Cluedo where the
children interviewed “witnesses” and solved the crime! All were ready for bed and
even remembered to clean their teeth!! All are looking for another action
packed day tomorrow!!

Osmington day 2
Trapeze if a personal favourite of ours, where the children have to challenge themselves to the limit and conquer their fears. Climbing up a telegraph pole on top of a windy hill and leaping into the sky would turn most people green, but every single one of the children gave it their all. They loved it.
There is brand new tunnel trail complex in Osmington this year. The children crawled through both large and small tunnels exploring the underground complex. The fabled light switch and tunnel to the beach seemed to elude them this time but they had lots of fun none the less.
Giant swing has to be one of the absolute highlights for the group. Strapped in in tandem, two children are hauled by everyone else high into the air and then propelled into a massive swinging arc. In all likelyhood, you would have heard the screams in Fareham.
Sensory trail involved blindfolds, obsticles and mud. Loads of mud. Oh how the teachers enjoyed that one!
An action packed day of excitement. More to come tomorrow. The children are in bed and sleeping (mostly). More updates tomorrow. Thanks.

Osmington 2014 Day 1
So we have arrived safely to a wet but still Osmington Bay.
The children are all very excited and looking forward to an action packed day
tomorrow. We have had a tour and eaten a hearty dinner and are now looking
forward to campfire (which is unfortunately indoors due to the weather). The accommodation
is excellent, set up on the hill and we have a great view of Portland. (France
as the instructors tell the children.) Check back tomorrow for a bigger update and
some pics. Remember to leave comments if you wish! Hope you’re having a quiet
night, someone has to be………..

Forget the Golden Compass, this was the Golden Frying Pan!
Year 5/6 competed in the annual pancake tossing contest today to see who would hold the glorious trophy of the Golden Frying Pan for the year. It was a fearsomely contested event, with a strong drive from Class 9 lead by the rapid Saffron and |Class 11 were hot on their heels. However, when it comes to flipping and running there was only ever going to be one winner! THE MIGHTY CLASS 10!!!!!!!!! From Josh at the start to Mustafa at the end, our amazing pancake heroes were steady flippers and quick runners to a child. Well done Class 10, you did great!!!

Building the Solar System
Solar System
Our project was to make a solar system, to scale using a
beanbag as the sun and also using a roll of toilet paper, from the staff
toilets, which represents the distance from the sun to Neptune (the furthest
planet from the sun).
We had a sheet of paper that had the distance from the
sun in million km and it also said the average diameter of the planets in km. We
thought that every square of toilet roll represented 60,000,000km. It turned
out perfectly going into 75 squares of toilet paper with Neptune at the end.
We marked out the planets and went to find objects that
were about the right size and placed them on the corresponding marks.
Then Mr Stubbs came out and took our photo.
We think that this project went very well seeing as we
only had 1 hour to complete the project!!

Book reviews
Book reviews are really helpful, as they share your thoughts with other children. Sometimes it can be difficult to find a really good book to read and you just need a helping hand.

Dragon's Den comes to Redlands
Our focus this week has been on explanation texts. We were given a weird invention (such as electric jewellery or a Bed Piano) and had to explain how and why it worked.
This morning we put our explanations to the ultimate test. Intrepid entrepreneurs from Year 5/6 pitched to 4 fearsome dragons (Mr Harcombe, Mrs Bowie, Miss Cull and Miss Rogers) in order to gain investment for their weird inventions. We even had the theme music playing as the children walked up the stairs to the den.
Some were more successful than others but it was a brilliant experience all round. Here are some photos and thoughts from the children.
Slowly walking up the stairs, we hear the music going. Feeling nervous,
prickles gradually climb up our backs. What are we doing? One step into the
room, and there’s no going back! The dragons stare at us like ferocious bears
and we’re two pieces of stake. The butterflies turn in our stomach as we spurt
out our lines. Will they like it we wonder?
“Is there any questions?” we ask. Oh dear, there goes the
pudding!
“What percentage of the business will you give us?” they say.
There is a break of silence… We offer them 25% of our company, but they reject
easily. There goes 45% of our company, but they want 50%, that just went too
far. The cheek of 50%, how dare they!! We wonder if there would any more mad
questions which they will try and smear on us. Our brains turn into a maze,
there’s no way out!
We hear laughter and then see a sudden smirk one dragon making a
fool of us! Nothing was funny, we were trying hard. First dragon… turns us
down, second, third, fourth, we’re out!!

Dragons Den
We crept up the stairs to hear the tune of Dragons’ Den. We
opened the door to pure awkwardness, then I spoke, “Our product is the bed
piano!” Mr Harcombe looked intrigued.
My partner, Annie, said her bit, I said mine, and then the
presentation was over. There was lots of questioning asking, “How many will we
make in a year?” I thought of £50,000 at first, then I thought, THAT’S TOO
MUCH! So I backed down to £10,000, which was still too much, but I said that
anyway, Annie looked at me with shock, I wonder what she was thinking but, Mr
Harcombe looked at me like I was an fool, (which I was). He whipped out his calculator
then said “£285” I was speechless, I knew it wasn’t EXACTLY £10,000, but £285
Most of the awkward questions stopped, that’s when they came to
a conclusion…
Mr Harcombe,”Great idea! But you never thought it through,
therefore, I’m out”
Mrs Bowie “I love the idea, Therefore, I’m going to make you an
offer, £100,000 for the first year, 60% of the company.”
I talked to Annie and we both realized, “60% is a lot, BUT I’LL
TAKE ANYTHING!” So we said yes to her offer. We both smiled vigorously.
Miss Cull “Love the idea, but same as Mr Harcombe, I’m out.”
Mrs Rogers “Same as Miss Cull, I’m out.”
We felt like jumping up and down in excitement, but instead, we
just kept our cool.

Dragons Den
When we found out we were going through, we were so nervous with
excitement. As we walked up the stairs we were trembling with fear. Calmly, we
knocked on the door KNOCK-KNOCK – we stepped in. Tristan fumbled for the page
in the book. Our mouths were forced to open – a childish squeak came out. The
four dragons gave us an eerie look, we knew that one wrong move and we could be
OUT! We carefully explained our invention without a single mistake – our hands
were shaking. After that it was time for the offers. Mr Harcombe glared at us – “I shall give you
30K,” he said “If you stick to your other designs”. Tristan and I considered
this offer. “I ask for 60% and I will give you 40K,” challenged Miss Cull. The
other two dragons decided they were out because we had two great dragons to
choose from. As Tristan and I quickly whispered we eventually became upon the
idea of Mr Harcombe gave us the best offer. Joyfully we skipped out of the room
our hearts beating with sudden happiness. We jumped into the classroom. “We are
IN” we yelled. Loud applauses finished this nerve-racking experience!

Graffiti!
In art we have been studying graffiti and we have been trying some of our own to promote change in the world, to inspire people or to just express ourselves.
